Working at the intersection of hardware, software and molecular science, we are committed to delivering on the promise of 3D printing, enabling commercial customers to go beyond basic prototyping to 3D manufacturing. Our company is built on the idea that diverse fields of study must come together to solve intractable problems. We have grand ambitions to create technology that will influence industry around the world.
We are seeking a material Staff Research Scientist to develop new material formulations and explore new chemistries for Carbon’s Digital Light SynthesisTM technology to enable unprecedented mechanical properties. This position will require understanding of structure-property relationships of polyurethane and UV curables and will utilize DOE (Design of Experiments) to optimize formulations to meet customer material requirements. The candidate will be expected to work cross-functionally with customers and the engineering team on process optimization and commercialization to maximize throughput and consistency of these next-generation material products.
Please note this is an individual contributor, hands on role. The role is located in our Redwood City, CA office.
Responsibilities:Develop, formulate, and test new material formulations for Carbon’s Digital Light SynthesisTM technology.Explore new chemistries, especially urethane and radical polymerization to enable unprecedented mechanical propertiesWork closely with customers to understand and define material specifications and validate materials for product applicationsUnderstand structure-property relationships of polyurethane and UV curable chemistry and utilize DOE (Design of Experiments) to find optimal formulations to meet material requirementsWork with engineering team to characterize the printing process for new formulations and understand how process changes affect properties and performance of final productsContribute to commercialization of new formulations for productionPerform hands-on polymer synthesis and polymer, resin, and materials characterization for the test material formulations.Keep thorough batch and characterization records.
Requirements: PhD in polymer, chemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering focused on polymer research with 5-10 years of industrial experience with polyurethane chemistry preferred. Outstanding BS/MS level with 10+ years of industrial experience will also considered.Fundamental understanding and knowledge of polymerization reaction mechanisms, polymer structure, testing and characterization methodologies.Understand polymer blends, polymer phase separation, compatibility, and how different components affect the mechanical properties including tensile, tear, fatigue.Hands-on experience in formulating innovative high performance polymeric products, especially polyurethane and/or acrylic resins or elastomers.Excellent written and oral communication skills.Experience in a broad range of polymer characterization instrumentation including: Instron, DMA, DSC, rheometer, TGA, GC, GPC, etc. Strong analytical skills with ability to make progress with ambiguous and incomplete information. Familiarity with advanced DOE (design of experiment) techniques and statistical analysis preferred.Safety conscious individual who actively promotes safe behavior in the department and takes responsibility for safe lab operationsExcellent organizational skills and an eye for detail.Ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast paced environment, handle multiple priorities, organize workload, and meet deadlines.Experience with MS office tools (Outlook/Excel/Word/PowerPoint/Project).Experience working in a collaborative setting.Ability to lift up to 45 lbs.
