Carbon’s Application Development team owns the collaboration with visionary manufacturing partners from concept to production readiness. Once applications have been identified to be a strong fit, Design Engineers help prospective customers successfully implement Carbon’s technology within their business. Our team drives and educates customers on Design for DLS best practices while creating products that meet or exceed customers requirements and objectives.
As a successful Application Engineer, you will work with Carbon’s Sales and Account Management teams and external customers to support the identification and development of products and businesses that will have a compelling benefit from implementing DLS. You thrive in employing your creative problem solving abilities and growing your depth of expertise across a variety of functional areas (including software, materials, hardware, product development processes and cross-functional team leadership). You are comfortable presenting to external and internal company stakeholders and can handle tough situations with poise and confidence.
Responsibilities: Learn and become proficient in Design for DLS best practices and their implementation in part and product designUse hypothesis-driven approaches to understand problems, define test methods, evaluate solutions, use feedback, iterate and provide recommendations to internal and external customersEducate Carbon’s customers on Design for DLS best practices, including how the printer works, details of Carbon's materials, design guidelines to follow, software used to create new design concepts, and post processing techniques.Evaluate potential projects for production based on DLS product-market fit, including technical readiness and cost model evaluationDevelop and optimize applications including customer benchmarks, prototype designs and bridge/production applications Drive all stages of application development including file preparation, resin dispense, printing, post processing, finishing, and quality control to support customers end-to-end in the Carbon journeyManage timelines, milestones, deliverables and troubleshoot when customers face inevitable challenges or roadblocksDocument design requirements and objectives, statements of work, standard operating procedures, next-steps and action items to align all internal and external team members
Requirements: Skilled with CAD and CAE software (SolidWorks, NX or CATIA; Magics, Rhino, Grasshopper) Experience in product development or product designFamiliar with traditional manufacturing techniques (injection molding, urethane casting, CNC machining) and design for manufacturing Experience with office productivity software for documentation, presentation, and data analysis (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google Suite)Detail oriented with excellent verbal, graphical, and technical communications skills are a mustDemonstrated creative problem solving abilities and positive attitude.Flexibility to adjust to a changing work environment (remote, hybrid, etc.)BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar, with a focus in Product Development or Product Design
Bonus Skills: Experience with manufacturing technologies and physical prototypingExperience with scripting, basic programming principles, or visual codingKnowledge of FEA and structural loadingUnderstanding of plastics and common material properties (tensile, impact, CTE, off-gassing, temperature limitations, bonding/adhesion)
