Head of Material Characterization
Redwood City, CA
We are seeking an outstanding leader to manage our characterization team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in polymer materials characterization and knowledge of how to use key data to inform product development decisions and troubleshooting/failure analysis. Materials are at the core of what we do. Our materials are used for applications such as dental, biomedical, automotive, aerospace, footwear, sports equipment, functional prototyping, and many more.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead materials characterization team at Carbon
  • Design and execute experiments to understand detailed mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of 3D printed materials
  • Design and execute experiments related to long-term durability, stability, fatigue-testing, UV and thermal weathering, etc.
  • Work with formulation team to understand structure-property relationships in order to design new and improved materials 
  • Manage routine testing and maintenance of characterization tools
  • Work with Carbon customers to understand materials specifications for various industries
  • Work with customer support team to perform failure analysis and root cause investigations to support current products
  • Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in polymer product characterization including thermal analysis, structure-property relationships, and physical/mechanical testing
  • Extensive experience in a broad range of polymer characterization instrumentation including: Instron, DMA, DSC, TGA, GPC, UV-Vis, FTIR, Impact Testing, Rheology
  • Broad experience in product development and testing
  • Experience in polymer formulation/compounding development and characterization
  • Extensive experience in failure analysis including polymer aging, weathering testing, FMEA, and product reliability testing
  • Experience in leading and managing teams
  • Advanced degree (or equivalent years of experience) in Polymer engineering, Materials science, or Mechanical engineering
  • Excellent communication skills
